Why the range is high
Opening a sealed system is not a parts swap. The refrigerant is recovered, the failed part is cut out and the new one brazed in, the filter-drier is replaced, the system is pulled into a deep vacuum to clear air and moisture, and it is charged to the exact weight on the rating plate. Each step takes time, and skipping one is how a repaired unit fails again.
Signs that point here
- The compressor runs, yet the cabinet stays warm after fans, defrost and sensors test good.
- Frost covers only part of the evaporator coil.
- The compressor clicks on and off within seconds and never settles.
- An oily trace at a joint in the tubing.
Check the warranty first
Sub-Zero’s standard residential warranty has covered the sealed system in full, parts and labor, for 5 years from installation, and the sealed-system parts alone through year 12; from year six the owner pays the labor. With an independent service like ours, those parts are claimed from Sub-Zero directly. Terms differ by product and date, so read the papers for your unit. One that went in with a house built in the 2000s is past year 12.
Repair or replace, in one paragraph
A comparable new built-in costs about $12,850–$20,900, and that is before it is installed and the cabinetry adjusted. Against it, a repair at $1,290–$2,990 keeps the panels, the opening and a cabinet that may have years left in its doors and liner. We tell you what else the diagnosis found, so you can judge the repair against the whole unit. The choice is yours.
Sealed-system questions
Can a refrigerant leak just be topped up?
Not properly. Adding refrigerant without finding the leak only buys time, and air or moisture let into the system shortens the compressor’s life. A sealed-system repair finds the leak, replaces the part that has it, and recharges to the weight the unit calls for. That work is why it sits in the highest range.
Is the compressor always to blame when the unit runs warm?
No, and it is rarely our first suspect. Fans, defrost parts, sensors and the control board can all produce the same warm cabinet for far less, so they are tested first. The sealed system is diagnosed only once those check out, which keeps you from paying for a compressor you did not need.
